COVID-19: Superstar Akshay Kumar donates Rs 25 crore to PM-CARES Fund
Mumbai: Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar Saturday announced that he will be donating Rs 25 crore towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s PM-CARES fund to help the government in its fight against coronavirus pandemic.
PM Modi had earlier Saturday announced the creation of the Prime Minister’s Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations Fund (PM-CARES) where people can contribute and help the government in the fight.
Taking to Twitter, Akshay said that safeguarding the lives of the people is of paramount importance right now. “This is that time when all that matters is the lives of our people. And we need to do anything and everything it takes. I pledge to contribute Rs 25 crores from my savings to @narendramodi ji’s PM-CARES Fund. Let’s save lives, Jaan hai toh jahaan hai,” Akshay wrote in tweet Saturday.
His wife, former actor and author Twinkle Khanna, praised Akshay for the step. “The man makes me proud. When I asked him if he was sure as it was such a massive amount and we needed to liquidate funds, he just said, ‘I had nothing when I started and now that I am in this position, how can I hold back from doing whatever I can for those who have nothing,’” she wrote.
A number of celebrities have come forward to donate money so as to help people in crisis.
South superstar Rajinikanth was the first celebrity to come forward by donating Rs 50 lakh to help daily wage workers.
Several A-listers from the south, including Prabhas, Mahesh Babu, Pawan Kalyan, Ram Charan and others have also donated money.
In Bollywood, Hrithik Roshan and Kapil Sharma too had come forward to fund relief work.
The War star said he has procured masks for BMC workers and caretakers, while Kapil had donated Rs 50 lakh to the Prime Minister Relief Fund. The country is witnessing a 21-day lockdown, as announced by the PM, to contain the spread of the virus.
According to the health ministry, the number of COVID-19 cases crossed over 900 in India Saturday with the death toll rising to 19.

Corona scare: Kerala-returnee men forced to stay in tent outside village
Bhawanipatna: As many as 12 Kerala-returnee men have been camping inside a makeshift tent on the outskirts of Kumbharpipalguda village under Jayapatna block in Kalahandi district after they were denied entry to their houses amid coronavirus scare.
According to villagers, these men had been working in Kerala’s Thrissur district at a cracker factory. They returned back to their homes as the numbers of COVID-19 positive cases started rising in that state.
Besides, the factory management locked down the factory and instructed the workers to go back to their respective native places.
With the help of the district administration, the workers reached Jaypatna and went to their village after a health check-up was conducted at Jaypatna community health centre.
While the returnees urged the school authority to allow them to use village schoolhouse during their quarantine period, the request was denied. Meanwhile, the villagers didn’t allow the men to enter the village either.
With no other way out, these men erected a tent and have been living there. Their family members have been providing them with food at the tent house.

Paid quarantine at 6 more hotels in Bhubaneswar
Bhubaneswar: In a bid to help contain the spread of COVID-19, Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) Tuesday allowed six more hotels here to facilitate ‘pay and use’ quarantine service.
With this addition, the total number of hotels in the Capital city offering paid quarantine facilities stood at nine.
“A large number of quarantine facilities are needed to contain the spread of COVID-19. Most of the government buildings have already been designated as quarantine facilities. It appears, ‘pay and use’ quarantine facility is an essential requirement for most quarantined persons. Hence, we have increased the number of hotels,” BMC commissioner Prem Chandra Chaudhary said.
“Those quarantined will be served breakfast, lunch, dinner and two bottles of water. These hotels are declared as quarantine facilities where services can be availed on payment,” he added.
Hotel Kamala at Manchsewar, The Urban Park at Kharavela Nagar, Bari International at Nayapalli, Hotel Kalinga at Bapuji Nagar, Hotel Bhinna Sakala at Chandrasekharpur and Hotel Dream Villa Resorts near Nandankanan are allowed to offer ‘pay and use’ facility.
“Hotel Kamala and The Urban Park will offer the facility at Rs 2,500 per day, while Bari International, Hotel Kalinga and Hotel Bhinna Sakala will charge Rs 1,400 a day to offer quarantine facility. Hotel Dream Villa Resorts, on the other hand, will charge Rs 900 a day to allow quarantine,” said a source.
Sources said that a person can avail the quarantine facility for a maximum of 14 days.

Stay indoors, stay safe: Hindi film industry stars urge people to follow Janata Curfew
Mumbai: Several Bollywood stars including Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif, Shabana Azmi have appealed to the people to follow Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Janata Curfew’ initiative, calling it a measured way to protect citizens from the coronavirus pandemic.
The country is observing a 14-hour Janata Curfew on Sunday, as appealed by the prime minister.
Bachchan took to Twitter and wrote, “Be indoors from 7 am to 9 pm .. But even after! And at 5 pm I shall clap on my balcony for them that work for us despite trying circumstances.”
The 77-year-old actor also shared a video of an empty Marine Drive, one of Mumbai’s iconic landmarks, calling it a reflection of “national discipline”.
“One plea, one instruct, one invocation, one implore… and a nation is in discipline! We observe a country shutdown! What an exemplary example we have set for the entire world, for the safety of each other. We are one, we are unique, we are India, Jai Hind.”
Katrina said Janata Curfew is an important initiative which should be followed sincerely.
“This is a sensible and measured way to protect us from this pandemic without creating panic and acknowledging the gravity of the situation. #JantaCurfew is a voluntary, participative people’s curfew. That is people stay at home by choice,” the Zero actor posted on Instagram.
“One India, one people – Bravo,” wrote actor Suneil Shetty as he shared a video of the deserted road outside his residence.
Sharing a picture of writer-husband Javed Akhtar working at home, Azmi wrote on Twitter how the couple is following self quarantine.
“@Javedakhtarjadu doing what he does best – writing, whilst abiding by #JantaCurfew and maintaining required distance whilst I sit watching the sea.”
Azmi, who came back from Budapest March 15, is practising self-isolation till March 30, she wrote on the microblogging site recently.
Salman and actor Ajay Devgn urged their fans to take the risk of coronavirus seriously and follow the government’s call for observing social distancing.
In a video posted on Instagram, the 54-year-old “Dabangg” actor lauded all those who are fighting the battle against COVID-19.
“This is not a public holiday, it is a very serious matter. Stop doing all this and start wearing masks to protect yourself. Wash your hands regularly, keep yourself clean and maintain a distance from others.
“What is the problem in doing all this. If it saves countless lives, including your own, then why are you not doing it. Please do this as it is a matter of life and death. This is my request to all of you,” the superstar said.
Devgn, who also shared a video message, said coronavirus is the biggest villain of all time and can be defeated if people co-operate.
“We just have to give support to them (the government, health workers). So support them and take care of yourself. Do not go out of your house without any reason. Stay away from crowd. Do not let coronavirus survive. Climax is fun when the villain dies,” he said.
Actor Kareena Kapoor Khan urged people to “make this world a better place for all of us”.
Actor Dia Mirza said people should stay at home, as it’s the best thing to do in the interest of everyone’s health right now.
“Also, we are lucky to have the privilege to be home comfortably. There are many out there working to protect lives and provide us our essentials, BIG RESPECT AND GRATITUDE TO ALL #JantaCurfewMarch22”
Veteran singer Asha Bhosle said at 5PM on Sunday, she, along with her family, will be chanting ‘OM’ to show solidarity with those who are “selflessly out there helping us overcome this dark hour for planet earth.”
“If we all isolate ourselves, we shall see this through. Every night has a day. Think positive,” the 86-year-old singer tweeted.
In a message of hope, actor Aditi Rao Hydari said amid the coronavirus outbreak, there lies a silver lining.
“The world is healing. We’re all closer despite the distance… In kindness, in care, in responsibility and most importantly in our love. We’re in this together, doing all we can to protect our one big family. #StaySafe #StayHome #JantaCurfew.
Actor Renuka Shahane hoped everyone is abiding by the Janata curfew, adding people should help medical professionals and staff by staying indoors even after today’s curfew is over.
“Let’s help all the daily wage workers we come in contact with to tide them over these financially distressing times. Let’s also help the senior citizens living alone in our neighbourhood for their daily requirements. Together we can fight the Coronavirus & its aftermath,” she added.
According to the Health Ministry, the number of COVID-19 cases has climbed to 341 in India. Death toll due to the disease rises to six in the country.

As China’s coronavirus outbreak eases, a wary return to shops for consumers
By Winni Zhou and Brenda Goh SHANGHAI (Reuters) - As shops shut their doors across Europe and the United States, in China the sharp drop in new coronavirus cases has encouraged consumers to venture back into malls and restaurants - for the most part quite gingerly but occasionally in throngs. Helping consumers return has been a loosening of quarantine and other restrictions on business and social activity. Restaurants that have satisfied authorities with plans for curbing the risk of infection are now allowed to serve groups of diners and most stores have reopened, though big brands like IKEA and Apple Inc have restrictions on crowds.

US couple traced from Kochi airport, placed under isolation
PTI
Alappuzha (Kerala)
An American couple, who allegedly gave the slip to police after being admitted to the coronavirus isolation ward of the medical college hospital here following complaints of fever and cough, was traced to Kochi airport and placed under observation.
The two were traced late Friday night and admitted to the Kalamassery medical college hospital isolation ward, police sources said.
They had visited the hospital here with fever and were sent to the isolation ward, but left the place shortly thereafter.
The tourists had come to Kochi from London via Doha on March 9, attended a Kathakali show in the port city, went for a houseboat ride the next day at Alapzuha, stayed at a Fort Kochi resort, before going to Varkala near Thiruvananthapuram and returned to Alapuzha, police said.
Meanwhile, efforts are on to track all those who may have come in contact with the Italian tourist, who tested positive for coronavirus on Friday.
Thiruvananthapuram district collector K Gopalakrishnan said it was a herculean task as the tourist had come to the state from Delhi on February 27 and was staying at a beach resort at Varkala. The Thiruvananthapuram district administration is in the process of preparing the route map of the places the tourist had visited after he arrived in the
state.
“There was a 15 day gap from the time he reached the state to being detected positive for virus.
Efforts are on to trace all those he had come in contact during this period. He had gone out to purchase food and other things”, the collector told reporters.
He urged people to stay indoors and not to move around and take precautionary measures.
Those coming from abroad should be under home quarantine for 28 days. Many are not following the restrictions while in quarantine, he said.

34 contacts of man died of Covid-19 quarantined in Hyderabad
IANS
Hyderabad
Health authorities in Telangana on Friday identified and placed 34 persons under home quarantine. These people had come in contact with a man from Karnataka
who died of coronavirus on Tuesday.
A day after it was confirmed that Mohammad Hussein Siddiqui (76), a resident of Kalaburgi in Karnataka died of COVID-19, the health department of Telangana said it identified the people who came in contact with the man while he underwent treatment at two private hospitals.
All the 34 are medical personnel including doctors, paramedical staff and ambulance staff. Director of Public Health G Srinivasa Rao said they were kept under strict isolation. He said their condition was stable and they will remain under observation. Officials were trying to find out if some more people had come in contact with the deceased person.
Siddiqui, who had returned from Saudi Arabia late last month, became the first man in India to die of COVID-19.
He is reported to have approached three private hospitals in Hyderabad. While one hospital refused to treat him, he was treated by two others. Doctors had screened him for coronavirus but before the test results could come, his relatives took him back to Kalaburgi on Tuesday. He died on the way.
Meanwhile, Telangana health department in a bulletin said 143 persons are suspected to have symptoms of COVID-19. While 26 of them are in hospital isolation, the remaining are under home quarantine.
Officials said test results of 23 persons were awaited. The state reported first positive case on March 2. The techie, who had returned from Dubai, is likely to be discharged from the hospital in a day or two.

Case against 35 persons over showing black flags to Scindia
PTI
Bhopal
Police on Saturday registered a case against around 35 unidentified persons in connection with the incident in which BJP leader Jyotiraditya Scindia was shown black flags in the city, an official said.
Congress workers had waved black flags at Scindia in Kamla Park area of Bhopal, when he was on his way to the airport on Friday evening.
Around midnight on Friday, BJP workers had staged a protest at Shyamla Hills Police Station alleging that the Congress protesters not only blocked Scindia’s car, but also attacked him.
During the protest led by BJP’s Bhopal district unit chief, Vikas Virani, the party workers demanded registration of a case against those involved in the incident.
“A case against 30-35 unknown persons was registered under IPC sections 341 (wrongful restraint) and 147 (rioting) in connection with the incident that took place on Friday evening when Scindia’s motorcade was passing by the Kamla Park area,” an official of Shyamala Hills Police Station said.
Terming the incident of Congress workers showing black flags to Scindia as “shocking”, former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan had on Friday demanded action against those involved in the “attack”.
In a statement, Chouhan had alleged that Scindia’s vehicle was stopped and stones pelted at it in the “life- threatening attack”.
“You can simply imagine the kind of situation prevailing in the state. A government that has lost majority is engineering attacks. I strongly condemn this incident and appeal to police and administration to take swift action against those responsible for this attack on Scindia,” he said.
Reacting to BJP’s allegations, state Congress secretary Abdul Nafees said, “Congress workers were protesting peacefully, but the BJP is doing the politics now. The BJP also used to protest against Scindia, but they are misleading when the Congress workers peacefully waved black flags.
“The party workers were angry as Scindia has ditched the party,” he said.
He also alleged that the police have registered the case against the protesters “under pressure from the BJP leaders”.

Cong slams govt over hike in excise duty on petroleum, diesel
PTI
New Delhi
The Congress on Saturday hit out at the government over the hike in excise duty on petrol and diesel and demanded that the benefit of reduced international crude oil prices should be passed on to the people.
Congress’ senior spokesperson Ajay Maken said the government should reduce the rates of petrol, diesel, and LPG by at least 35-40 per cent.
He said the Congress will strongly raise the issue both inside and outside Parliament to democratically pressurise the government to ensure people’s welfare.
The government on Saturday hiked excise duty on petrol and diesel by a steep Rs 3 per litre each to garner about Rs 39,000 crore additional revenue as it repeated its 2014-15 act of not passing on gains arising from slump in international oil prices.
However, retail prices of petrol and diesel will not be impacted by the tax changes as state-owned oil firms adjusted them against the recent fall in oil prices and the likely trend in the near future, industry officials said.
Maken said the total incidence of excise duty on petrol has risen to Rs 22.98 per litre and that on diesel to Rs 18.83.
The tax on petrol was Rs 9.48 per litre when the Modi government took office in 2014 and that on diesel was Rs 3.56 a litre, he said.
Central excise duty has been hiked more than a dozen times since the BJP came to power, Maken said.
“The Modi-Shah government has looted the people by increasing excise duties and huge taxes on petroleum products and did not bring this under GST despite the consistent demand of Congress,” he said.
“The ill-directed anti-people policies of the BJP government are responsible for the high prices of petrol, diesel and LPG despite crude oil consistently remaining down to less than 50 per cent for the last six years,” Maken said.
The Congress demands that the benefit of reduced international crude oil prices should be forwarded to the people and the rates of petrol, diesel, and LPG be reduced by at least 35-40 per cent, Maken said, adding that petrol and diesel should be brought under the GST.
The Congress also demanded that the hike in excise duty/customs duty affected by Modi government since May 2014 on petroleum products should be withdrawn immediately until it is brought under the GST regime.
Member of Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Board Nilesh Shah has himself conceded that the government has earned a profit of Rs 3.4 lakh crores by not passing on the benefits of reduced oil prices to the consumer, Maken said.

Europe now epicentre of coronavirus, says WHO
IANS
New Delhi
Europe is now the “epicentre” of the global coronavirus pandemic, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director General of the World Health Organization said on Friday.
His comments came as several countries in Europe reported steep rises in the number of infections and deaths. Spain is now the worst affected after Italy. On Friday, Spain reported a 50 per cent jump in fatalities to 120. Infections increased to 4,200, BBC reported.
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus urged countries to use aggressive measures, community mobilisation and social distancing to save lives. “Do not just let this fire burn,” he said.
Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said a state of emergency will come into effect there on Saturday for two weeks.
More than 132,500 people have been diagnosed with COVID-19 in 123 countries around the world, according to the WHO.
The total number of deaths has reached about 5,000 – a figure Ghebreyesus described as “a tragic milestone”.
“Europe has now become the epicentre of the pandemic, with more reported cases and deaths than the rest of the world combined, apart from China,” he said.
“More cases are now being reported every day than were reported in China at the height of its epidemic.”
Europe’s worst-affected country, Italy, has now reported more than 15,100 cases and 1,000 deaths. France has 2,860 cases, Germany 2,369 and there are now 798 confirmed infections in the UK.

Brazil President tests positive for coronavirus
IANS
Rio de Janeiro
Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has tested positive for coronavirus, Brazilian media reported on Friday.
The positive test comes after Bolsonaro’s press secretary was found to have the infection following a trip to the US.
Bolsonaro met US President Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida during his three-day trip to the US starting from March 7.
Earlier, a Brazilian official who met US President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence just days ago tested positive for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).
The Brazil government confirmed on Thursday that Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro’s press secretary, Fabio Wajngarten, has tested positive for coronavirus, Xinhua reported.
Wajngarten accompanied Bolsonaro on a trip to the United States over the weekend, where he met Trump, Pence and other White House officials at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida.
Bolsonaro’s medical team “is adopting all the preventive measures necessary” to ensure the president and his delegation on the trip, as well as other aides, are in good health, the government said, adding that it had notified US officials about Wajngarten.
The White House said on Thursday that Trump and Pence had no plans to undergo testing.
Earlier in the day, Bolsonaro cancelled his attendance at an event in Mossoro, Rio Grande do Norte state, reportedly due to concerns over the pandemic.

Iran says virus kills another 97, pushing death toll to 611
AP
Tehran
Iranian state TV said Saturday the new coronavirus outbreak has killed another 97 people, pushing the death toll in the country to 611 amid 12,729 confirmed cases.
Iran is suffering from the worst outbreak in the Middle East. The virus has also infected a number of senior officials there.
Saudi Arabia earlier said it would halt all international flights to the kingdom for two weeks in the latest effort to contain the spread of the new virus.
Gulf nations have been scrambling to contain the pandemic, which has spread to more than 100 countries and infected more than 130,000 people. Of special concern is nearby Iran.
For most people, the new coronavirus causes only mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia.
The vast majority of people recover from the new virus in a matter of weeks, but the outbreak has caused more than 5,000 deaths worldwide.
The state-run Saudi Press Agency, quoting an unnamed Interior Ministry official, said flights would be cancelled starting Sunday.
In the United Arab Emirates, health officials ordered the elderly to stay home because of the coronavirus outbreak and authorities said some federal employees could begin working from home for two weeks starting Sunday.
Abu Dhabi’s The National newspaper reported that nightclubs and tourist restaurants in the emirate will be shut down until the end of March. The Department of Culture and Tourism also suspended all planned events, including concerts, in Abu Dhabi. The decision does not extend to
Dubai.
A number of major sporting events, conferences and other gatherings have been cancelled across the globe. The virus is highly contagious, and even those showing no symptoms can spread it, making large public gatherings particularly risky.
